The Sub-4 Mile

For nine years the world record sat at 4:01, until Roger Bannister first broke 4:00 in 1954. Now high schoolers do it. These are the U.S. high school boys who broke four minutes as eligible high schoolers, and how carbon-plate super-spikes reset the curve after 2019.

Why the curve bends after 2019. Two things changed at once. Carbon-plate "super-spikes" (World Athletics allowed them in competition from 2019) add a stiff plate and resilient foam that returns more energy per stride, and independent testing links them to meaningful running-economy gains. Around the same time, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) buffering supplements, long known to blunt the acidosis that limits hard efforts, became far easier to tolerate in newer encapsulated forms, so more milers actually use them. The shoes reset the physics; the buffer squeezes the last seconds. The result is visible in the data: sub-4 went from a rare career milestone to something a deep field, and a growing list of high schoolers, now clears.

Three technology shifts help explain why the curve bent. They do not simply add up (they overlap, and they rest on very different evidence), so treat each as a rough, sourced estimate, not a guarantee. Figures are for a 4:00 mile.

Why you cannot just add these up. Super-spikes and a fast track both work partly through the same mechanism (energy return at footstrike), so their benefits overlap rather than stack. The evidence tiers differ too: the super-spike gain is peer-reviewed and measured, the bicarbonate effect is real on average but highly individual (some studies show none), and the synthetic-vs-cinder number is coaching and forum lore, not a controlled study. Conditions (altitude, weather, pacing, track upkeep) can swamp any of them.

At the ~4-second super-spike estimate, only two boys beat 4:00 by more: Jim Ryun and Alan Webb. Both did it before super-spikes existed.

Pick a runner and hand them technology their era did not have. A runner already on a synthetic track or in super-spikes cannot gain it twice, so only the boxes they were missing are live. This is a rough what-if, not a prediction: the effects overlap and do not add up cleanly, so treat the fast end as a ceiling.
